【THE HOKUSAI PROJECT】
From Hokusai's birthplace,Sumida: helping today's artisans discover new techniques for Hokusai's expressions.
Hokusai produced works with roots in the Edo period lifestyle:woodblock prints,"sensu" folding fans, "uchiwa" round fans, festival food stalls.
From Hokusai's birthplace,Sumida, together with today's artisans, we transcend time to discover new means of expression based on Hokusai's images. Based in Sumida, KUME Co.,Ltd. is at the forefront of Japan's T-shirt industry.

An earwig is flock-printed boldly on the front of the T-shirt with a unique touch. This 100% organic cotton T-shirt, made of fibers grown carefully without agricultural chemicals, was dyed using Japan's traditional dying method (Sumi ink dying) handed down since ancient times. The misty look and delicately moist gradations of Sumi-e paintings are intermingled. The natural textural variations give a unique expressive power to the T-shirt. The effect is enhanced by a post-dying process after the T-shirt is sewn, which brings out a subtle layered feeling on the sewn parts and at the collar, perfect for matching with denim pants or skirts. The natural black Sumi dye is resin treated for colorfastness when laundering, so you can relax and enjoy the T-shirt as your favorite everyday garment.
