More support for Tohoku craft
Among the bleak stories following the 3.11 disaster is the catastrophic state of crafts in Tohoku. It is a double blow, with numerous broken wares and production facilities, individual of workshops, but also with the obvious recess in tourism.
It is difficult to follow the path of what is being done to cheers up things. Putting notices onto a single board of information is something underdeveloped here so you have to go fishing. Kanazawa had a Craft for the People exhibition in support of Tohoku until April 19. The Japan Traditional Craft Center in Ikebukuro currently supporting a selection of Tohoku wares is coming back at it with a larger event starting April 29, right for the Golden Week. This one will zoom through Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and Tochigi traditions. If you haven’t done so, take a look at the new Craft Center web site. The Japanese version is beautiful and the English side much more readable than it used to be.
