The Golden Week holiday season starting end of this month is also the season for major crafts festivals and markets all over the country. Mashiko city in Tochigi prefecture is famous for pottery but half of it 40 kilns have suffered partial or total destruction with the Mar. 11 earthquake.

A huge quantity of wares are broken. A donation and help center to rebuild damaged kilns has been set up. Granted you are interested and you speak Japanese, there is room to help by calling the 益子焼復興支援センター at 0285 72 8584. Craftsmen have been busy recreating stocks for the coming huge Mashiko Spring Pottery Fair. The theme for this year is Beer Cups, so don’t expect to sip juice. The Fair starts on April 29th and runs until May 5th, still shorter than the usual years.

The fair also helps by channeling donations to the Obori Soma Yaki ware production in Fukushima prefecture where the damages are immeasurable.

Kokeshi dolls, second hands, are a feature of antique markets. When they come by crowds, they gather like well behaved school children for the commemorative class picture. Or they stay put, alone.

As you can read in the Miyagi Zao Kokeshi-kan museum flyer, “An encounter with Kokeshi makes you feel calm and happy for no particular reason.”

The key here is “no particular reason”. Kokeshi dolls stand high in the ranking of totally useless, but necessary artifacts of traditional crafts.

Kinakina Kokeshi are white, featureless. I don’t know the name of this one, black, bruised because it has had a life, made shiny by wax now drying.

Among the bleak stories following the 3.11 disaster is the catastrophic state of crafts in Tohoku. It is a double blow, with numerous broken wares and production facilities, individual of workshops, but also with the obvious recess in tourism.

It is difficult to follow the path of what is being done to cheers up things. Putting notices onto a single board of information is something underdeveloped here so you have to go fishing. Kanazawa had a Craft for the People exhibition in support of Tohoku until April 19. The Japan Traditional Craft Center in Ikebukuro currently supporting a selection of Tohoku wares is coming back at it with a larger event starting April 29, right for the Golden Week. This one will zoom through Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and Tochigi traditions. If you haven’t done so, take a look at the new Craft Center web site. The Japanese version is beautiful and the English side much more readable than it used to be.

I already know based on access statistics that the truly traditional stories I select are less read than the contemporary content. Dear Readers, this one writer will tell you one truth : you are wrong.

You simply can’t get the whole picture unless you start also opening the doors of that not brightly lit shop and watch those woody, sturdy, bulky, earthy wares and log house types of furniture you saw during your last visit to a natural hot water spa.

It all belongs to the same world, the slab of wood on four massive feet that supports your breakfast, you know, that grilled fish and the pickles and the rice at the inn that are so … exotic, and a must-be part of the “we went on to a trip in the countryside, and people were so nice and good natured” kind of me-too saw this done that travel into backyard Japan. If you start shunning at these, you will quickly end up into the contemporary “kawaii” accessory range of cute wares I will try my best in the Daily Kogei not to cover.

Because, as with Mr. Eiji Oka of Shimane prefecture, with whom I spoke in length and relished at his storyteller talents, his workshop of some ten craftsmen have been delivering both the massive table, and the exquisite matcha tea delicate spoon, all from the same good old and sturdy woods, namely, black persimmon, but also chestnut and zelkova, that is, woods that won’t break anytime soon.

Everything at his workshop started in a world of art, charm and exclusive intellectualism. That is why at the core of the Okaya workshop know-how is the carving of wares that belong to the tea ceremony, what with the boxes to keep parchment like letters and poems neatly boxed on a sturdy, bi colored low table.

The problem is that these pleasant activities have been declining way before Astroboy came into the picture. Mr. Oka adapted and is offering everything, from highbrow delicious to down to earth objects you will love to have – and use – everyday, not because they feel cool, but because they oozes of serenity.

The pleasures of daily life here start by noticing how the spoon you grabbed to eat that yogurt, not the metallic one, but that laquered one, is so smooth and light in the hand. You can have a small, reasonably priced collection of such wares, starting from chopsticks, that warm up the day in tiny touches without notice. It goes down to the shoehorn at the entrance. When you start noticing it with content, it means you’ve come home in Japan.

Okaya web site, crowded like a furniture shop, is here to discover.

I briefly covered my chance discovery of Yoichi Hatakenaka the other day at Isetan in Shinjuku. Some more words are in demand although pictures should suffice.

Mr. Hatakenaka is a native of Wajima city in Ishikawa prefecture, land among other things of laquer tradition. He is now located in Yokohama though and has been active in art circles since the 80s.

His current focus is washi, Japanese sturdy traditional paper, with a slew of trompe l’oeil like jeweleries and ultra light mural designs that can also be assembled to create huge artistic shapes of paper waxed with laquer. The pictures tell enough.

The Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition will be held in 2012 and the applications are closing in July this year. "Urushi" is the sap of the "urushi tree" and the generic word to talk about lacquer. "Shikki" stands for lacquer ware.

The previous session took place in 2009. It is truly international as you can see in the application list of 2009, and the winning works at the time. Ishikawa prefecture is centered around Kanazawa city, a powerful promotional center of traditional as well as contemporary craftsmanship. It still has plenty of room to turn more international. The works in display in 2009 were a proof of how urushi expands into the modern, and beyond the “figures imposées” of the tradition. The winner was Takeshi Igawa with the workd “Time Travel” as illustrated above. You can read about Mr. Igawa and watch other stunning works at the KEIKO Gallery in Boston.

Another work by Takeshi Igawa was on display until yesterday at the Cavin-Morris gallery in New York, as part of the FLAWLESS: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer exhibition. To see other examples of contemporary urushi works, go the gallery web site above, look for current or past show at Cavin-Morris.

I spoke with artist Yoichi Hatakenaka but let me postpone a detailed presentation of his work for a later day. Suffice to know that he is a wizard of washi, Japanese paper.

All his works that cover accessories, jewelleries, wall decorations and wrought iron like construction are all made out of washi. The jewelleries of all kinds of metals are actually washi. You can’t believe it until you pick one up and freeze at the lightness of the object. Wall hanging decorations are the ultimate seismic proof objects. They won’t fall, or if they do, they may not break.

This feather like box is a beauty, believe me. It is made of washi, of course, lacquered, of course. It absolutely requires delicate manipulation. It allows me to show you a glimpse of Box Prototype 2. Readers already know I am into boxes.

This one ushers so far in unthinkable possibilities. You might wonder or already understand what’s in this see-through box. Yes, it has to do with the olfactory world of Japan. More on this at stage 3.
